About us

Deaf Society of Canterbury or Deaf Club is one of a network of Deaf Clubs around NZ. We provide a venue for culturally Deaf members of the community to meet and share their common language (New Zealand Sign Language), culture, history, sporting and recreational activities.

We are a membership organisation and our membership is free and open to anyone around NZ who is Deaf or has an interest in Deaf community. Members receive a regular newsletter and we organise a range of activities and social events for the community.

We also support local Deaf groups with governance, legal status, finanical reviews, fundraising, etc.

Deaf clubs helps to maintain the social/cultural network/bond between the members and the Deaf community, through recreational/social activities and specific project. NZSL is the main mode of communication at Deaf club.

How are we Deaf friendly?

DSC (Deaf Society of Canterbury) is managed by a Board of Deaf members of the Canterbury community.

Three part-time staff are a mixture of Deaf and hearing. All hearing staff use NZSL, have undergone Deaf Awareness training and have experience working in the Deaf sector.

DSC works closely with Deaf Aotearoa in Canterbury/Westland areas and we often deliver projects jointly.

Our clubrooms are closed at the moment after the Christchurch earthquakes but we are committed to setting up new fully accessible clubrooms as soon as possible for use by the Deaf community.

About us

Deaf Sports New Zealand (DSNZ) was established in 1963 and is the only national organisation which is responsible for sports to be beneifical to Deaf athletes in New Zealand.

How are we Deaf friendly?

Deaf Sports NZ hosts the New Zealand Deaf Games every two years. Deaf competitiors from all over NZ meet to compete in these games for the Aotearoa Turi Shield.

We also support our athletes to attend the Deaflympics which happens every four years.

About us

We meet every Sunday at 3 pm at Garden City Bowls in Iverson Terrace to play Tenpin Bowls which is consists three games as it help us prepare for National Deaf Championship held yearly around New Zealand every Queen's Birthday weekend and also NZ Deaf Games we all compete at handicap of 0 to help us achieve our goal to best of our ability. We give one month trial before becoming member of Deaf Tenpin Bowls.

We play as individuals so that points added up for end of year trophies/certificates. We do fundraising to help us with travel cost.

You can also come for fun social games as we help with techniques of how Tenpin Bowling is done.

How are we Deaf friendly?

We are very supportive deaf friendly all use NZSL but we do welcome hearing join us if they want as it not issue as club are mostly Deaf people as they want to learn NZSL and meet others who are Deaf as well.

We have just celebrated 20 years of Deaf Tenpin Bowls.

It is a good way to mix and socialise with others and be proud of our community by showing our skills of tenpin bowls.

We are a national lobby and advocacy organisation that promotes the issues facing disabled people.

Local branch advocates (DPA Christchurch) are always working to improve access and rights for disabled people in six key areas:-

• Human Rights

• Health Services
• Transport
• Education
• Access

Local and national authorities recognise the DPA as the "collective voice" for all people with disabilities and impairements.

How are we Deaf friendly?

We have interpreters at our Committee Meetings and at Forums we organise throughout the year.

We have an easy read version of Civil Defence Booklets for all disabled people including the Deaf.

The DPA supported the Deaf Aotearoa NZ in the introduction of Teletext, Captions on TV and New Zealand Sign Language being recognised as the 3rd official language in New Zealand.

How are we Deaf friendly?

In Christchurch, we have a group of deaf refugee learners who are being taught NZSL by a volunteer teacher.

The group join the Deaf community for regular walks and other activities.

Flynn Express Photo Restoration and Enhancement specializes in restoring and enhancing your precious family and landscape photos to their former glory with the same loving care with which they were originally taken.

 Royce Flynn is the owner and operator of Flynn Express. He is a born and bred kiwi, born in Invercargill, attending school in Christchurch. Royce now lives in Hamilton.

 Royce got his first camera when he was 11 years old, and so started his photography passion.  He worked as a building maintenance officer and in various other roles over the years,  but his passion for photography lived on in his spare time.

 Royce is an active member of the Railway's Hobby Group and worked as an amateur  photographer for the Railway for 49 years..  His favorite railway travel route is the Midland Line from Christchurch to Greymouth and Otira.

Royce supports to The Wahine.
