NZ Relay provides telecommunications services for Deaf and Hearing Impaired people who want to communicate with their hearing family members, friends, business customers and vice versa.

Quality Assurance/Accreditation

Sprint Relay is the provider of NZ Relay Services through a contract with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).

How are we Deaf friendly?

New Zealand Relay offers a variety of different relay calling options to suit Deaf people’s choice of communication.

These choices are:

  • Video Relay Service
  • Voice to TTY
  • Mobile Text Relay

We offer a service that is:

Accurate and Transparent

The relay Assistant voices everything you type and types everything you say.

Private and Confidential

All New Zealand Relay calls are strictly private. When you hang up, the entire conversation is automatically erased at the Relay Call Centre.

Affordable

There is no surcharge for relay assistance. Local and national landline calls are free of charge.

Note: You will still need to pay for your telephone line rental and Internet connection charges.

NZCare works mainly with people with intellectual disability, some of whom also have physical and sensory impairments. We are also contracted by MSD to provide a service for young people and we have a service for people with neurological diseases, mainly Huntingtons. We offer residential homes and vocational services.

We support a number of people in our services who are Deaf.  We have been involved in NZSL training for staff to provide them with the tools to communicate well with the people they are supporting.  We also work with Deaf Aotearoa to ensure people are linking in to the Deaf community if they wish to.

SLIANZ supports high standards of interpreting access for the Deaf community through offering professional development, a code of ethics, a complaints procedure, and advocating for the use of qualified interpreters.

About us

Our club started 2005 under “Deaf 4 x 4” and then 2008 changed the club name to “South Island Deaf 4 x 4 Club”.  Our club is under the Deaf Society of Canterbury and New Zealand Four Wheel Driving Assn (NZFWD).  We have 10 or more members and we also have 4 x 4 trips especially in the long weekend.  Eg. Queen’s birthday, Labour Weekend,  Show Weekend and Xmas holiday.  The committees organised a trip and its good experience learning different grades driving 4 x 4.  We also join the hearing 4 x 4 club having and wild mud fun too.  While out on any 4 x 4 trips, enjoying the scenery of forest, lakes, views of mountains.  Also we always have a nice picnic or dinner out in the scenery as it’s so beautiful and amazing.

Trip co-ordinator is responsible to make sure all trucks are fully equipped before going out on trips. Also training we have a workshop once or twice a year.

Committees have their meetings once every month, AGM once a year and also BBQ fundraising to help towards our trips.
